What makes a Hindi font classic?
Classic Hindi fonts follow the proportions of printed books and newspapers. Their strokes vary in thickness, their shapes are steady, and they feel formal without being stiff. That is the look people expect from a wedding invitation, a certificate, a letter of appreciation or a book cover.
Serif fonts for Devanagari are harder to design than serif fonts for Latin letters, because the script has its own structure. The horizontal line along the top, called the shirorekha, has to join neighbouring letters cleanly, and the matras above and below need room. Well-made classic fonts handle this quietly, which is why long text in them stays comfortable to read.
The nine fonts below are the classic serif choices in the generator. Type your names, a date or a line of verse in the box above, and the cards will show it in each font so you can judge them on real words.

Using classic fonts for invitations and certificates
- Test the longest name first. Names with conjuncts such as प्रतिष्ठा or विद्यालय reveal spacing problems that a short word hides.
- Choose colours that print well. Gold on deep maroon or green has a traditional look. Dark brown on cream is gentle and readable. Avoid pale colours that fade on paper.
- Keep line height generous. Matras need vertical room. About 1.5 times the font size is a safe line height for multi-line text.
- Download a transparent PNG. Use Transparent and place the text on your card design. Print designs usually need a larger canvas, so place the image at the size you need and check it before printing.
- Read the licence for commercial printing. The fonts are open-licensed on Google Fonts, but for a large print run, read the licence on the font's page.

Questions about classic Hindi fonts
Which serif font is best for a wedding invitation?
It depends on the mood. Eczar and Inknut Antiqua feel traditional and formal, while Rhodium Libre is more elegant. Type the names of the couple in the box above and compare them, since long names look different in each font.
Is a serif font good for a long paragraph in Hindi?
Yes, for printed or document-style text. Fonts such as Martel, Vesper Libre and Annapurna SIL are built with reading in mind. For text on a phone screen, a plain sans-serif is often easier on the eye.
Do these fonts work for Sanskrit verses?
They support Devanagari, so they display Sanskrit text, but some conjuncts and marks used in Sanskrit are drawn differently from font to font. Test your verse in the generator, and try Sanskrit Text or the Tiro Devanagari Sanskrit font from the stylish page as well.
Can I use a classic font in Word?
Yes. Press Get font on a card to open the font's Google Fonts page, download the family and install it on your computer. After that it appears in Word's font list.
